Facial aging: It doesn’t end with skin

22350yp52rm0b6fThe onset of old age has long been associated with wrinkles, fine lines and loose skin developing across much of the body, and particularly with crinkles and looseness of the face. Those who prefer to maintain a youthful, energetic appearance always have options: preventing lines and wrinkles with daily moisturizers, renewing and rejuvenating skin with chemical peels and laser treatments, and of course tightening and smoothing the facial features with a face lifting surgical procedure.

According to a study performed last year by Howard N. Langstein, M.D., however, the appearance of aging may not be just skin deep. Langstein studied a collection of CT scans which depicted the development of forty men and women’s facial bones over time. He found that the prominence of the jaw deteriorates rapidly with age, and suggested that the depletion of the face’s lower boundary may constitute a much larger part of the aging appearance than was previously thought. His findings were presented at the annual meeting of the American Association of Plastic Surgeons in San Antonio, Texas.

What does this mean for the average man or woman considering a face lift? Nothing, yet. A rhytidectomy, or common face lift, is still the most tried and true method of restoring a smooth, fresh appearance to your face. According to Langstein, though, similar surgical procedures of the future may include the insertion of special implants to redefine the lower jaw and “bring back” the facial structure of youth.

Selphyl, coined the Vampire Facelift, storms the market

A new procedure is gaining popularity among cosmetic surgeons across the United States. Selphyl treatments, which do not involve surgery and can be easily administered in-office in a matter of minutes, may be an effective way to restore a youthful glow to patients who are interested in a fuller, smoother face.

The treatment has acquired some interesting nicknames such as “Vampire Facelift” and “Vampire Filler”, owing to the fact that it’s derived from the patient’s own blood supply. Selphyl treatments are prepared by drawing blood from a patient’s arm, filtering out the blood’s platelets using a centrifuge, then injecting the extracted platelets into strategic areas of the patient’s face. According to some doctors, the platelets can stimulate collagen production which brightens and smooths facial features naturally for more than a year.

While the procedure has been promoted on television’s “Doctors” and “The Rachel Ray Show” as well as mentioned in a handful of local news broadcasts, its efficacy remains cast in a shroud of uncertainty. The president of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, Dr. Phil Haeck, expressed concern about the lack of clinical research associated with Seplhyl.

“There are no scientific studies,” said Dr. Haeck, “only personal attestations.”

So far the FDA has refused to approve Selphyl as a facial rejuvenation treatment. The market for “Vampire Filler” continues to grow, however, and with treatments ranging from around $900 – $1,200 more and more cosmetic surgeons are eagerly embracing the new trend.
