What to Expect from Breast Augmentation Surgery

July 7, 2011 by admin

Nearly three hundred thousand women in the United States opt to undergo breast augmentation surgery each year. Breast augmentation is by far the most popular cosmetic procedure in America, and the figures aren’t much different across the world.

Women choose to have their breasts surgically enhanced for several reasons. While some women have suffered damage to their breast tissues due to illness or injury, most are simply enticed by the prospect of a boosted self esteem, an improved image, and a bolstered confidence with which to embrace the world. Most women can accurately imagine the effects that breast augmentation may have on their lives, but not many are clear on just how the surgery is performed.

Breast augmentation begins with a series of consultations with a qualified plastic surgeon. Surgeons help their patients explore implant options, and assist them in choosing a target shape and size for their breasts. Benefits to the patient such as improved self-esteem, social life, physical appearance, sex life, and overall quality of life are discussed. Surgeons also brief their patients on possible complications such as difficulty breast feeding or the possibility of necessary correctional surgery several years down the road. Recovery times are also discussed, and a date and time are chosen for the operation.

Breast augmentation patients are normally administered a general anesthetic, ensuring that they’re unconscious during the surgery. Their implants are placed in one of four major positions within the breast — specifically chosen for the most patient-appropriate compromise between implant coverage and natural shape — according to discussions already held with their surgeon before the operation. Once the implants are in place, any incisions made are repaired and the patient is allowed to recover from anesthesia.

Operation time ranges from one to several hours depending on the procedure, and full recovery is normally achieved within about six weeks. Many patients are able to return to work or their daily routines within about a week, and can expect to see any remaining scars completely fade within a few months.

Breast augmentation is not as much of a hassle as many women suspect. Talk to a qualified plastic surgeon to learn more.

FDA deems silicone breast implants safe

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently released a statement confirming that new medical studies have demonstrated the general safety of silicone breast implants. The studies were performed by Johnson & Johnson’s Mentor Unit and Allergan Inc., two well known and long standing breast implant manufacturers.

Silicone breast implants were removed from the market in 1992 by the FDA on the grounds that the product’s manufacturers had not demonstrated the safety of the implants. From 1992 until 2006 saline implants dominated the market. Saline breast implants consist of a bio-compatible pouch filled with a non-toxic saline solution. While they look and feel somewhat like silicone implants and are well known for their safety and reliability, they are generally less sought after due to their watery, less than life-like texture.

During the fourteen year ban on silicone implants in the United States, researchers were unable to link the implants with any long term adverse health effects. Failure to identify any serious negative side effects associated with the implants led to their reintroduction into the market. The FDA asserted, however, that the reintroduction must be accompanied by new studies concerning the long term ramifications of receiving breast implants.

After the ban on silicone implants was lifted, Allergan and Mentor both began independent studies to confirm that their products adhered to the highest health and safety standards. Their studies monitored some forty thousand women who had undergone breast augmentation surgery, and documented the success of the procedures as well as the reliability of the implants at several year intervals after the initial surgery.

While maintaining active, accurate records of as many as forty thousand patients proved to be a complicated and difficult task for both Mentor and Allergan, the studies thus far have delivered some promising results. The FDA’s statement released late last month concluded that silicone breast implants are generally safe, and that only about one in five women experience complications within ten years of an implant procedure.

New ultrasound procedure shows face smoothing promise

11637husv5xti8j1A new ultrasound device for use in face smoothing and lifting procedures has recently been introduced to the cosmetic surgery industry. Ulthera, as the device is known, works by targeting and heating the connective tissues beneath the facial skin, causing them to shrink and tightening the overlying skin. The device is able to target tissues at several specific depths beneath the skin, allowing doctors to use the same ultrasound delivery method to stimulate collagen production that can effect smoother, healthier looking skin.

Ulthera has been used as a non-invasive treatment for falling cheeks, sagging jaw lines and hooded eye lids, and has at least some proven credibility. A clinical evaluation of the technology performed at Northwestern University claims that test subjects showed a “clinically significant” lift of the brow line in just one treatment. Patients who have undergone various other treatments with Ulthera have reported firmer, tighter feeling skin and a general satisfaction with the procedure.

Ulthera procedures are very fast (30 – 60 minutes) and continue to deliver firming results for two to three months after the initial treatment. They are, however, rather uncomfortable and can produce burning, tingling or needling sensations in particularly sensitive patients. While Ulthera is certainly an exciting step towards the future of cosmetic procedures, its makers admit that “there isn’t a replacement for the dramatic effects of surgery.”

Planning Tips for Cosmetic Surgery

April 23, 2010 by admin

If you are thinking about having cosmetic surgery, there are several things to consider before you go under the knife. Whether you are getting a tummy tuck, liposuction, a breast augmentation, facelift or another procedure, you need to think about what will happen before and after the surgery.

Choosing to have any surgical procedure done is a big decision, and it is not uncommon to have doubts. Make sure that you discuss your questions, problems or concerns with your surgeon prior to the big day. It may also be beneficial for you to speak with other individuals who have had similar cosmetic procedures done. Your surgeon may be able to refer you to someone who has had similar issues regarding their surgery.

After you have prepared your mind for the change, you should prepare yourself physically for the experience. Here are a few things that you can do to get ready for the surgery. You may have to acquire medical clearance from your regular doctor to ensure that your body is healthy enough to have the procedure. Many surgeons require this prior to agreeing to perform cosmetic surgery on an individual.

Your doctor will discuss specific preparation with you as well as answer any last minute questions you may have. This includes the possibility of scaring, the expected recovery time, and medications. You may need prescriptions for nausea or pain, and your surgeon will most likely provide these prior to the surgery. This way, you will have them handy if you need them after the operation. Certain medications may need to be avoided, specifically aspirin and similar products. Make sure that you stay away from anything on this list that the doctor will provide.

Begin taking better care of your body so that you can reduce the amount of recovery time you will need following the operation. This includes exercising, quitting smoking, and eating a healthy amount of protein. Doing these things will make the entire process easier on your body. Also, make sure that you take care of any personal grooming activities before the surgery, such as haircuts, waxing, pedicures, etc.

Just before the surgery, make sure that all of your regular household and work responsibilities are taken care of, or arrange for someone else to do these things for you. If you wear nail polish, take it off, as the anesthesiologist will need to examine your fingers to check for circulation issues.

Since certain procedures may cause swelling, including breast enhancement, so it is a good idea to prepare comfortable, loose fitting clothing for two weeks following the surgery. Set aside the clothes prior to the operation.

Remember to talk about all of your concerns with your surgeon, and be honest about the state of your health, especially regarding medications that you take. If you follow all of these preparation tips, you will have a great surgery with minimal recovery time.

Ideal Breast Implant in West Palm Beach – Florida

The Ideal Breast Implant in West Palm Beach, Florida

Ideal Implant Incorporated was founded January 2006 to develop an ideal breast implant that would combine the best of both current implants: the natural result of silicone gel and the safety of saline for “Peace of Mind.”

While the silicone gel implant has a certain appeal, many women are uncomfortable with the idea they could have a silent rupture, undetectable except with an MRI scan, and prefer to have saline instead of silicone gel in their body. Women have expressed their desire for an improved saline-filled breast implant, one that gives a natural appearance and tissue-like feel similar to the silicone gel implant, but not the wrinkling, bouncing and globular look of the current saline implant. In short, a “hybrid” breast implant.

Years of research, testing and input from women and plastic surgeons led to the design of the investigational IDEAL IMPLANT® Saline-filled Breast Implant. On the outside, it looks like a standard saline implant, except that the edges have been lowered so it may contour better to the chest wall. On the inside, it simply contains a series of additional implant shells that are nested together. This internal structure was designed for control of saline movement to reduce bouncing, and for support of the implant edges to minimize wrinkling and prevent collapse of the upper portion of the implant.

The Clinical Trial

The IDEAL IMPLANT is now being studied in an FDA-approved nationwide clinical trial, limited to 500 women having their first breast augmentation or replacement of existing saline or silicone gel implants. Your plastic surgeon is an investigator and has the information about how you can become a participant in this study.

The Ideal Implant Study Participants’ Trust Fund

Payment for Participation

You will not receive any payment for enrolling in this study. All costs of your surgical procedure are your responsibility.

You will receive payment for participation in the follow-up visits over 10 years that give information on safety, efficacy and outcome of the study implants. If you complete ALL required follow-up visits during the 10-year follow-up visit phase of the study, you will receive a lump sum payment from an independent Trust Fund. Required follow-up visits are at 2 and 6 months, and at 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 years.

In addition, the Trust Fund will act as a financial protection plan to reduce your financial risk should Ideal Implant Incorporated cease operations. In that case, you could use your Trust Fund payment toward the cost of removal or replacement of your study implants.

Highlights of the terms of this Trust Fund are:

  • When you have your surgical procedure, Ideal Implant Incorporated will deposit $3,500 into the Trust Fund.
  • The Trust Fund will invest in a stock and bond portfolio.
  • Depending on the market, the value of the $3,500 deposit will fluctuate. Based on history, the $3,500 will grow to between $8,083 and $12,136, with an average of $10,010, during the 10 years of the study.
  • When the last participant completes her 10-year follow-up visit, the Trust Fund will be closed and those who remained in the study and completed all required follow-up visits will receive an amount equal to the total in the Trust Fund divided by the number of participants.
  • If you miss ANY required follow-up visit, you will be dropped from the study and lose your share of the Trust Fund. However, your share will remain in the fund and be divided among those who stay in the study.
  • If your study implants are removed and replaced with non-study implants, you will be dropped from the study and will receive a payment of $290 for each required follow-up visit that you completed.
