Breast Reduction
Reduction Mammoplasty
Large, sagging breasts can create physical problems. Neck, shoulder and back pain are common complaints. Postural problems, persistent skin rashes, and breast pain may also be present. Breast reduction entails the surgical removal of up to several pounds of tissue with an uplifting and reshaping of the breasts, providing both a cosmetic and functional result. When large reductions are required, the procedure generally falls under the heading of reconstructive plastic surgery. Smaller cosmetic breast reductions may be performed as well.
The procedure usually involves incisions which encircle the areola and then extend down to and horizontally along the breast fold, forming an inverted “T”. Scars will usually fade over time, but not disappear. The nipple and areola is typically left attached to the underlying tissue and raised to a higher, more appropriate level and the breast is reduced and sculpted around it. Patients typically return to non-strenuous work within 7 to14 days.
